Our Daily Breach - 2024/10/14
It's a happy Canadian Thanksgiving for everyone except the libraries of Calgary.
Today is Canadian Thanksgiving. According to Time magazine, Canadians began formally celebrating Thanksgiving around the time of the American Civil War—largely as an expression of gratitude for not being part of the United States. Even today, as American media are filled with reports of political and environmental disasters, the sentiment of pride in Canada’s distinct identity remains strong.
While Canadians may be proud of their differences, they are not immune to the cybersecurity threats that affect their southern neighbors. In fact, a recent breach in Calgary, Alberta, underscores just how vulnerable even proud and separate nations can be to the same threats.
As of 5PM Friday (2024/10/11), all 22 public libraries in Calgary have been closed due to a cybersecurity breach. There are no details on the incident but as of Monday, all libraries and their respective member services are still impacted by this breach.
