Gasp! Comcast lied about the impact of its data breach.

The American telecommunications m̶o̶n̶o̶p̶o̶l̶y̶ company Comcast has admitted that 237,703 subscribers had their names, social security numbers, birth dates, and addresses stolen in this latest breach.

The source of the breach was the third-party debt collection agency, Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS). The breached data includes customer information from around 2021, as Comcast stopped using FBCS services in 2020.

In March 2024, FBCS initially reassured Comcast that a ransomware attack hadn’t impacted its customers. Then in July, they circled back to inform Comcast that, in fact, its customers' data had been compromised after all. Big oof, as the kids say.

Maybe they're born with it. Maybe it's incompetence. One thing is clear: both companies had experts who likely tried to warn them about the impact of this breach, but instead, Comcast and FBCS chose a different approach:
