Our Daily Breach - 2024/10/01
Santiago, Chile (2019)
"Give us each day Our Daily Breach, and forgive us our sins of weak, predictable passwords. Lead us not into the temptation to repeat the failures of those we chronicle."

The United Breweries Company, better known as Compañía Cervecerías Unidas (CCU) is Chile's largest brewer, second-largest exporter of Chilean wines, and sells a wide portfolio of beverages. In 2023, CCU made $1.3 billion in gross profit. If you've ever treated yourself to a glass of Chilean Carménère, you have likely used their distribution network. Unfortunately for CCU, the wine no longer flows from their bottles as they are at the center of an unresolved cybersecurity incident.

In a filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on September 26, CCU revealed that an “external agent” had breached its sales and distribution IT systems. The full extent of the breach remains unclear. What is known is that sensitive data has been compromised, and as of the filing date, the breach had yet to be fully contained.
