A Cyberpunks Guide to the 21st Century

"We are all tiny godless monkey brains piloting meat suits amongst billions of others, powerless to grasp the scale and impact of our actions, but desperate for connection we constantly deny ourselves out of fear of the mounting complexity of modern life." - Prig.
This article is dedicated to my Dad. It's also dedicated to Brenn Briggs aka Fraq.
THIS TECHNOLOGY WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE STUFF BETTER. UNFORTUNATELY, THINGS ARE FUCKED.
- ENSHITTIFICATION
- RAMPANT CORPORATISM
- CROOKED POLITICIANS
- ECOLOGICAL DESTRUCTION
It's left the world in a state of survivalist nihilism, and technology evolving faster than we ever thought it could.
The only way we can overcome it collectively is as a group of trusted individuals - you don't have to love everyone you meet..but mutual aid and trust can help break down barriers and limitations for people who you may not necessarily ever meet. The powers that be want you to give up on your fellow man. However, YOU cannot let this happen. I'm talking to the one reading this rant. We all can help in our own way.
My hope is that by the end of this guide - we can provide those of us overwhelmed with a FRAMEWORK of how we might go about approaching this for a lot of people.
Modern survival for those of us who are largely used to being dependent on current systems may notice that the water is being systematically shut off due to an extreme lack of neglect.
This is not your fault, nonetheless - we're all dealing with it now. It doesn't negate what came before, but now is the starting point we have.
Our continued existence has less to do with wilderness skills and is more about adapting to rapid technological, environmental, and societal changes. This article is aimed at people of all creeds, political persuasions, and backgrounds.
You don't need to be wealthy or influential to benefit from this paradigm shift in thinking. In fact, the more confusing this world is to you, the better off you'll be reading this guide. I made it specifically for those of us who are coming to grips with this new reality.
QUESTION EVERYTHING. NEVER SETTLE. KEEP HOPE ALIVE.
Adaptability and Evolutionary Thinking
Drawing from evolutionary biology, Daniel Brooks and Salvatore Agosta argue that our survival depends on returning to evolutionary principles—adapting our behaviors to fit new realities, fostering resilience, and learning from past mass extinctions to guide our actions today (Darwinian Survival Guide, Darwinian Survival Guide Book Review). This means accepting our limitations as mammals. It also means working towards something more equitable for ourselves and others during these uncertain times.
This along with human competition means that if you are to survive, you will need to be willing to adapt. The world is streamlining new technologies that you may not be entirely comfortable with. To survive it, you must adapt to this also.
Often we are at the whims of what society demands. You should never surrender your brain to technology 100%, however. Critical thinking is probably the most important skill you will have available at your disposal in this new era.
In light of this, know that understanding new/emerging technologies and how they operate will be crucial to your success.
- Embracing change and uncertainty. Keeping pace with a changing world is frightening. You must be brave to go into the unknown.
- Self maintenance. You don't make your best decisions under extreme duress. That means making sure you're managing your mental health and getting the help you need.
- Ensuring future success. Focus on sharing and preserving knowledge and achievements for future generations. Without a foundation, a structure crumbles.
- Engaging Critical thinking - Unfortunately many people are using this time to take direct advantage of other through trickery, schemes, and scams. Also misinformation abound creates a very distorted view of the world. Question Everything
- Acting ethically - Make sure you are respecting others boundaries, and in turn your boundaries are being respected as well.
- Building trust - We know the capacity for humans to be cruel. They can be kind and understanding too. Try your best to forge bonds with others.
Protect Your Body, Mind, and Spirit
Mental health and physical health are important. Think of it this way - your opposition would want nothing more than to see you crack, to see you break. The Internet is being used to wage a never-ending war on your mind.
Whether it's clout seekers or government psyops, you must ensure your mind is guarded and tended to. The powers that be already see your life and well being as forfeit. Therefore, you can't rely on them to provide you with what you truly need.
They don't know, and they don't care. If they did - THEY WOULD HAVE HELPED BY NOW!!!!
Habit/Skill | Purpose/Benefit |
---|---|
Limit technology distractions | Improves focus, reduces stress, enhances well-being |
Regular physical movement | Counters sedentary lifestyle, boosts resilience |
Community engagement | Builds support networks, fosters diversity |
Environmental stewardship | Ensures long-term resource availability |
Lifelong learning and adaptability | Prepares for rapid change and unexpected challenges |
Simple, practical advice for most. You can choose to keep these fundamentals with you and that would be enough. Remember though, technology is something that you will need to use in order to keep up in our very weird and unprecedented world.
Putting the Cyber in Punk
No matter your thoughts on LLMs, the Internet, and other related technologies, they are here to stay. And ultimately they are a tool, not your enemy. Learning how to use these tools are what will help you stay relevant and alive in this Brave New World. Surveillance is the norm, and the ones in Power will justify it however they wish to do so. It doesn't matter if its ethical or not. Therefore, you must be smarter, better, and more cunning than them.
Knowledge can't be outlawed. They can't outlaw the creativity of the human brain. Those limitations can be surpassed by those of us who never stop searching, learning, and questions. But you gotta actually use the technology. Treat learning its limitations and abilities seriously. Here is a table of skills you can and should internalize so that you may yet live another day.
Skill/Attitude | Why It Matters | How to Cultivate It |
---|---|---|
Digital Literacy | Navigate, hack, and defend in a wired world | Learn coding, cybersecurity |
Critical Thinking | Resist propaganda and manipulation | Question sources, verify facts, watch out for baloney |
Privacy Awareness | Protect personal data and autonomy | Use encryption, limit sharing |
Adaptability | Thrive amid rapid change and disruption | Embrace new tech, stay flexible |
Community Building | Survive in fractured, unequal societies | Support local networks, share |
DIY Ethic | Corporate services can’t be trusted | Learn to repair, repurpose tech |
Street Smarts | Urban chaos is the norm | Stay alert, read social cues |
Mutual Aid and Direct Action gets the Goods
REGARDLESS OF YOUR POLITICAL PERSUASION - for many of us it's pretty darn difficult to get by just on our own efforts. Humans are social creatures. Often its not just about making casual chit-chat; - rather it's about managing survival and effecting change. Our ability to communicate and organize in any fashion has influence. It can be used to help promote a cause or create a space where people can feel safe to engage in healthy discussion and create realistic solutions for others.
You may have seen the word community mentioned in here several times, that's not an accident, its integral.
Find a space where you can work with others to learn and communicate. The powers that be don't want you to see your fellow humans as trustworthy. They can be, but the support and respect has to be mutual. It can't be one sided.
Such spaces can only be created when you are establishing proper respect and boundaries with others in the party. There is always a certain level of cohesion expected in any space.
You and the other party have to agree on that. Once you have a common goal or field you want to focus on, start setting some goals on how to go about it. Don't be afraid to get support, you will need it.
CLOSING NOTES
In a world that demands everything and more for you, it's time figure out what you're willing to stand for. Do your best to make that manifest.
Never give up, trust in the human spirit.
I can't promise you what lies on the other side of tomorrow, but how we approach it together is what will set up apart from our ancestors.
Don't be afraid of what awaits us on the other side of that hell. Lock arms with whoever will be there to support you along that journey.
Be good people. Mean it.
